The Interview

Don't ...

1. Bring up questions about compensation and benefits. Save these questions for discussion after you have received an offer, or discuss them with your recruiter. If asked about your salary expectations during the interview, indicate what you've earned in the past but that you're more interested in the opportunity than a specific dollar amount.

2. Discuss negatives about your past or current employer. It is a fatal mistake to complain about a previous employer or situation.

3. Talk too much or over-answer questions. Nervousness can make people gabby. On the other hand, however, give more of an answer than just a simple yes or no. Explain whenever possible.

4. Be overbearing, arrogant or egotistical.

5. Say "I don't know." Instead, use phrases such as "I can find that information" or "I haven't used that software but know I can learn it quickly."

6. Smoke or chew gum during the interview.
